Background:

Miss Alba Scotto d'Apollonia is currently with the CNIE as a visiting Erasmus student and is a Chemical Engineering masters student in her last year at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy.

Due to water shortage and pollution, purification of water is playing a key role in the modern age. Among the existing technologies, the use of membranes represents a convenient method to clean water thanks to its simplicity, highly selective separation, no need or little need of chemicals, effectiveness on complex contaminants and low energy consumption. Nevertheless, the great challenge in the membrane field is to reduce the fouling, especially the type that is irreversible.

Alba received the opportunity to be involved at CNIE in a project that aims to improve the chemical-physical features on membrane surfaces, in order to fabricate efficient antifouling membranes for water purification and bio-separation. This study will also be material for her masters thesis.
