RSC and Chemical Society Reviews publish review by Dr Trogadas and Prof Coppens on 'Nature-inspired electrocatalysts and devices for energy conversion'

Dr Panos Trogadas and Prof Marc-Olivier Coppens' extensive review has just appeared in Chemical Society Reviews (DOI: 10.1039/C8CS00797G). The article is open access, and you can read it here.

This article surveys the opportunities presented by a systematic, nature-inspired engineering methodology to optimise the performance, scalability and stability of electrochemical devices, such as fuel cells and batteries. Highlighted is progress at each scale, from the molecular and the nanoscale to the device-scale, but also the importance of using an integrated design approach across scales, which is built on fundamentals in electrocatalysis and transport phenomena, and leverages progress in materials science, and advanced manufacturing methods, to translate lessons from nature into working, efficient technology for energy conversion.

With over 400 references, as well as figures and tables that present the nature-inspired design approach, recent achievements and open challenges, we hope that this review will further the understanding and use of this powerful, systematic methodology in the sustainable energy and environmental domain.
