Announcement of CNIE Inspiration Grant: Modelling hierarchical transport network of rocks using multiscale modelling and X-ray tomography

04 January 2016

We are glad to announce that Dr Jayesh S. Bhatt (in collaboration with Dr David A. Faux and Prof Peter J. McDonald from University of Surrey) has been awarded a Centre for Nature Inspired Engineering Inspiration Grant to perform a collaboratory project – Modelling hierarchical transport network of rocks using multiscale modelling and X‐ray tomography between the CNIE at UCL and University of Surrey.

Rocks are a class of natural disordered materials that have formed as a result of millions, or even billions, of years of painstaking evolution. Such a long evolutionary process ensures that the networks of pores formed within them are optimal to accommodate fluids within such dense, confined environments in a balanced manner. Within these pores, the rocks may be holding stocks of fluids such as water, oil, natural gas, or a mixture of these and tapping these valuable resources requires a detailed understanding of the transport mechanism of the fluids. This project aims to combine some of the state-of-the-art experimental facilities available at UCL with a novel numerical modelling technique to examine the feasibility of studying multiscale transport of fluids through the complex porous networks within rocks.
